Sweet & Spicy Korean Chilli Paste with Squid & Shrimp

Sweet & Spicy Korean Chilli Paste with Squid & Shrimp


  • – Squid
  • – Shrimp (fresh or pre-cooked)
  • – 2 fresh Red Chillies
  • – 1 medium Yellow Onion
  • – 1 knob Ginger
  • – 1 bunch Green Onions (for garnish)
  • – 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • – 1 cube maggi
  • For the Sauce:
  • – 2 tablespoons Gochujang/Korean Chilli Paste
  • – 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
  • – 2 teaspoons Sugar
  • – 1/3 cup of Water
  • – 4 cloves of Garlic (minced)


  1. Cut the squids into small pieces.
  2. You can use pre-cooked shrimp like I did to speed up the process or fresh shrimp, by removing its shell and by deveining it. Season with maggi and set aside.
  3. Here comes the little work. Remove the seeds of the red chillies and chop it up into inch-long pieces.
  4. Slice the yellow onion, ginger and the spring onions, and set all these aside.
  5. Heat up a large skillet with 2 tablespoons of any type of olive oil and when the oil is hot, throw in the ginger, chillies and onion slices.
  6. Mix in the Gochujang (Korean chilli paste), soy sauce, sugar, water and minced garlic together in the skillet.
  7. Stir all the ingredients around for a minute. Add in squid and shrimp. Allow it to cook for about 2-3 minutes, before turning off the fire.
  8. Remove the sauce from the stove and garnish with green onions.
  9. Great for serving with brown rice.
